Brittney Morea at Cooper Union!

After a rigorous portfolio interview process, one of our art students, Brittney Morea (a Jr.), was selected to participate in the Cooper Union summer art program. Approximately 36 out of 2000  were selected!!  This spring Brittney also won  3rd place in the Ward Melville HS Annual Spring Art Exhibition.

Big Buddies Make A Big Difference!

The Town of Brookhaven 2005 Volunteer Award has been  awarded  to  three Miller Place High School Students.  The  recipients are: Ashley Townsend,  Mark Thomas Cutone and Benjamine KrausValerie Frost is the program’s facilitator. 

Chris Gambino 
has been awarded a paid fellowship from the NASA Summer
 High School Apprenticeship Research Program (SHARP) in 
order to study bone density with his mentor, Dr. Stefen Judex 
at SUNY Stony Brook.

THE KROB
Newsday School Journalism Award Winner

On May 24th, 2005   Long Island Newsday  awarded the Miller Place High School newspaper, KROB,  two awards for Journalism.  The annual awards are given to high school and college level publications for a variety of categories including News, Features, Sports, and Editorials.

The KROB accepted a Second Place News Writing Award for freelance writer and future staff member, Kyle Reitan’s News article To Iraq With Love.  The article focused on local communities collecting supplies to send overseas to our troops. 

A Third Place Editorial Cartooning Award was accepted on behalf of former student, Tom DiBernardo (Class of ’04),  for his So Close Yet So Far cartoon depicting the epitome of “Senioritis.”

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY: 
Miller Place Chapter

On March 22, 2005, fifty three Miller Place High School students were
 inducted into the National Honor Society.  Students who enter this
 prestigious organization have worked tirelessly to fulfill the academic,
 leadership, service and character requirements.   Each student was
 sponsored by a faculty member and was approved by a committee
 comprised of faculty representatives.

MPHS Media Club  

MPHS Media Club kids  participated in this past Saturday's  PTO
 Bunny Breakfast.  As always, the kids  made MPHS shine.
Members of the Media Club took and produced great photos of
 the children with Bunny and supplied a full accounting to the
 PTO.  The net profit was $90.  The PTO will use this money to
 purchase Media Club supplies  for next year's picture events:
 Breakfast with Santa & the Bunny.

THE LONG ISLAND CHALLENGE

MPHS Students, Lisa Hovagim, Matt Randall, Carter Sommerville
 and Scott Aspinall appeared on The Long Island Challenge.

 and Humanities Symposium at Adelphi University to compete for
 scholarship money.

from the American Museum of Natural History.

North Country Road Middle School

We are proud to report the following list of the many important student and staff achievements at the NCRMS:

Our 6th grade student Ryan DeVito entered his Science Expo project, “Hooked on Sonics” in the Brookhaven National Lab Annual Science Fair on May 13th.  Out of 500 students who entered the competition Ryan earned an impressive first runner-up!

We were pleased to learn from the John Hopkins University that our students Meghana Kuthyar and Scott Wudarski took the SAT test received grades of Distinction (scored as well as or above the average college-bound senior). 

Congratulations to Jordan Randazzo for her outstanding literary efforts in creating one of the top three poems nominated for publication from the entire eighth grade class of the North Country Road Middle School.  Their original poems will be published in the 2005 edition of the Teacher’s Selection: Anthology of Eighth Grade Poetry.

Congratulations to the 8th Grade Band who placed 2nd and earned a rating of excellent and the Jazz Ensemble who placed 1st, earned a rating of superior and received the “Overall” jazz band for the 5th year in a row at the Music in the Parks Festival in Hershey, PA.  

The 7th and 8th Grade Orchestra placed second with a rating of good and Jazz Chorus placed first with a rating of excellent at the Music in the Parks Festival at Hershey Park.  The students who participated contributed to the prestigious award, which was honored to only one school from the entire festival, which was the “Espirit de Corps” award for the best character and school spirit.

The staff and student body of the NCRM were honored to encourage Chris Pendergast on his annual Ride for Life from Manhattan to Montauk again this year.  The student Government and National Junior Honor Society raised close to $200 to help find a cure for ALS.

Congratulations to 7th grader Robert Patrovic who was the winner in the age nine and over category in the Times Beacon Record Newspaper poetry contest “My Mom is the Best Because….”  Robert’s poem “My Mom” was published in the May 5th issue of The Times Beacon Record Arts and Lifestyles section.

The North Shore Sun sponsored its annual “Save Our Earth” contest.  This event focuses on our children, while emphasizing how important it to cherish and conserve our planet for generations to come.  This year students were invited to submit essays, poems or artwork.  We were proud to see the artwork of our 6th grade student, Nichole Schultz published in the April 31st edition.

Thanks to Mrs. Opitz’s 7th grade 4th and 7th period science classes for cleaning up our Memorial Garden in honor of Earth Day.

The Character Coupon winners for April were Henry Baudanza, Alexis Scotti, Thomas Augeri and Clark Smith.  The merchants of the month were McNulty’s Ice Cream Parlor and Port Jefferson Bowl.

Congratulations to 8th grader, Jillian Parisi for participating in the 21st Annual AATI Italian Poetry Contest at Stony Brook University on April 8th.  Jillian recited a 14-line poem by Italian poet Ugo Foscolo.  She recited the poem from memory in front of a panel of judges.  Jillian is to be commended on her accomplishment.

On April 12th five of our 6th grade students participated in the 2005 Middle School Regional Science Bowl at Brookhaven National Laboratory.  6th grade teacher Mary Ellen Hay prior to the competition coached sixth grade students Suzanne Greens, Sean Hagan, Ryan DeVito, Corey Hayes, and Tyler Simon.  The students were the youngest in the competition. 

The North Country Road Middle School was excited to host the 11th Annual Science and Technology Expo on Tuesday, April 12th from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.  This was an incredible evening for students to showcase their science and technology projects.  As a result of increased use and knowledge of technology the projects improve each year and this year we have seen some of the best projects ever.

Under the direction of Technology teachers Mr. Patrick Hughes and Mr. Ben Flaiz the Miller Place Robotics Team competed in their 6th F.I.R.S.T Robotics Competition at Hofstra University on March 17th, 18th and 19th.  The following students earned the sportsmanship award in this year’s competition: James Bryant, Danielle Citro, Matt Coleman, Anthony Cordiale, Laura Gambino, Brett Gibbons, Vincent Juliano, Mike Paradinski, James Scott and Timothy Williams.

The following students attended the “Read Across America – Dr. Seuss Birthday Celebration” where they read to the Andrew Muller Primary School students on March 2nd:  Alexandra Aliamo, Jessica Blanchard, Liana Bloom, Anthony Borrelli, Michael Bryant, Zachary Buonaiuto, William Coveney, Christopher DeLucia, Nicholas DiPaola, Melanie Everitt, Destiny Filomena, Stephanie Friss, Ryan Gennaro, Anthony Ianconetti, Michael Irminger, Daniel Kim, Nicole Maningo, Danielle Martino, Devyn Moody, Sara Ann Montalbano, Michael Morlock, Samantha Nawrocki, Michael Paradznsky, Marissa Pardi, Jameson Pike, Caitlin Prisco, Anthony Rifici, Frank Saccente, Alexis Scarlett, Dylan Seigerwald, Gabriel Tatilian, Erin Taylor, and Eric Ziese. 

Congratulations to the 6th grader Ryan DeVito, the winner of the NCRMS 9th Annual Spelling Bee held on February 8th.  Ryan went on to compete in the regional competition, a semi-final bee, on March 3rd at Suffolk Community College followed by the Long Island Spelling Bee Finals on April 7th at the same location.  Congratulations also to runner-up, 2nd place winner was 8th grader Dan Bua. 

The following students were inducted into the National Junior Honor Society at our induction ceremony on January 20th.  Jacqueline Belizar, Jenna Colascione, Susana Debbe, Theresa DeLucia, Kristina Denenkamp, Pamela Ernst, Steven Farrell, Stephen Ferraro, Christoper Fox, Briana Garcia, Christina Janus, Emily Krollage, Meghana Kuthyar, Charles Larson, Julia Levine, Regina Liatonio, Matthew Mangelli, Heather Masterson, Anneliese Morris, Breanna Norris, Laura Parrella, Erin Pipe, Dorisanne Ragon, Jordan Randazzo, Lauren Read, Julia Reidlinger, Christopher Remkus, Stephanie Sharpe, Courtney Skarupski, Amelia Smith, Clark Smith, Chelsea Stokes, Eric Tripi, Kaleigh Wilson, and Amanda Wilutis.

All of our Honor Roll students enjoyed an ice cream social during lunch periods on December 17th.

The NCRMS National Geographic Geography Bee was held during the week of December 6th under the direction of Social Studies teachers Jeffrey McGuire and Jacqueline Sanatore.

Seventh grade student Aaron Davies won the school wide bee and has taken the exam to compete at the state championships.

The following outstanding music students have been selected for the Suffolk County Music Educators (SCMEA) All-County Division I Festival:  Orchestra:  Mariana Debbe, Katie DuBois, Carolyn Nachman, Alex Miller, Ryan DeVito, Mary Kate Moore, and Katie Ramirez.  Chorus:  Julia Frampton, Michael Fales, Megan Nesbitt, and Ginger Rizzo.

The following Orchestra students were chosen to participate in the Long Island String Festival Association’s Music Festival on February 6th, 2005: Sabrina Cornia, Krysta Verdone, Brittany Flanagan, Mariana Debbe, Erin Pipe, and Lauren Svododa.  These students are among the top string players from Suffolk County in their respective levels.

The following students will have their work displayed in the “Colors of Long Island Student Expressions” Art Show at the Long Island Museum of American Art, History and Carriages in Stonybrook through February 6th:  Lawrence Hassett, Alena Junda and Carol Ann Monteith.

Five student government representatives along with other school districts from across Long Island participated in the United Cerebral Palsy Disabilities Awareness Day.  Students were able to meet with people of all ages and disabilities to gain a better understanding of the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities and how they triumph.  Student government participants included Erin Pipe, Shannon Benesh, Sarah Perry, Christina Valente and Gina Moran.

Mrs. Weingartner’s 6th grade class was invited to participate in creating an issue of Kidsday for Newsday. On November 23rd editor Mary Beth Foley visited with the class to brainstorm topics for the issue.  

Three students also participated in an author interview for a daily issue of Kidsday.

Mrs. Hay’s 6th grade science class recently had their question about mold answered in the “How Come?” section of the November 17th issue of Newsday.

Mrs. Janet Shanks’ math classes participated in Mrs. Shanks’ annual “Thanks for Math” unit.  In honor of Thanksgiving the unit reinforced the use of fractions when creating a recipe.  Students shared their baked goods and donated extra treats to Hope House Ministries.

We are proud of the fundraising efforts of our school community for the tsunami relief.  Inspired by Ms. Ackermann’s Earth Science classes, the students have already raised close to $1,500.  Additional fundraising efforts include a February school dance.
